Competency #1: Developing Discipline-Related Teaching Strategies

Description of Core Competency

The purpose of this first competency is to provide teachers with the skills they need to navigate their specific discipline. Exposing teachers to different teaching strategies, methods, and theories allows them to develop their habits and take ownership of their identity and biases. To learn more about my discipline– political science– and the importance of building an inclusive environment in the college classroom, I enrolled in a course that taught me about the necessary key components of establishing an such an environment (e.g., critical self-reflection, student feedback, identifying biases) and how course climate is directly related to student wellbeing, motivation, and success in the classroom.

Artifacts and Materials

  • This syllabus outlines the learning objectives, content, and relevant delivery formats of the course.

  • This reflection journal helped me think critically about relationships between identity, biases, expectations, and the classroom context in building an inclusive course environment. It assisted in translating abstract definitions into tangible efforts that I could implement in the classroom, like surveys and setting expectations.

  • The Identity Wheel activity offered me the space to consider my identities and which identities I give the most consideration. This will continue to inform how I view student-teacher relationships, course expectations, and any biases that mitigate the thoughts and perspectives of all students.
